What is Lectionary-Based Catechesis Faith Formation?

"Jesus Christ is the energizing center of evangelization and the heart of all catechesis," says the National Directory for Catechesis. "Jesus Christ is at once the message, the messenger, the purpose of the message, and the consummation of the message" (4). Jesus still speaks to us in the Gospels, our primary source for encountering him and his message. "The Gospels transmit the life, message, and saving actions of Jesus Christ and express the teaching proposed to the first Christian communities" (76).

Faith Formation for Children Grades Pre-K through 8, Youth and High School

SAINT EGBERT PARISH FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM

CURRICULUM:  LECTIONARY BASED CATECHESES

PRE-KINDERGARTEN and KINDERGARTEN  (Program: Stories of God’s Love)

The children are called to focus their natural curiosity, energy, and wonder on Stories of God’s Love, with special attention being paid to people, created in God's image. Age appropriate Bible stories, discussion, and activities introduce the children to faith concepts such as the Person of Jesus, belonging to the Church, and prayer; all of which is age appropriate.

GRADE 1:  PRE-FIRST EUCHARIST PREPARATION YEAR (Program: Gospel Weeklies-Promise)

The First Graders will come to know Jesus and to celebrate the kingdom of God while exploring the Sunday readings. They will grow in understanding of key faith concepts such as God's love, the life and teachings of Jesus, and belonging to the Church. Activities, prayers, and practices foster Catholic identity and help the children to follow Jesus every day.

GRADE 2: IMMEDIATE FIRST EUCHARIST PREARATION YEAR (Texts: Reconciliation-Pardon and Peace,    Eucharist-We Give Thanks and Praise)

The Second Graders will be preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. The children are called to enter into a sacramental relationship with Jesus and the Catholic Christian community. Activities, prayers, and practices help the children grow in faith.

GRADES 3 and 4:  (Program: Gospel Weeklies-Good News)

The Third and Fourth Graders are invited to accept Jesus' call to a life of love lived within the faith community of the Church through lessons that focus on the Sunday readings. The foundations of Christian morality is presented. Saints and Christian heroes offer role models. Activities, prayers, and practices stress the universal nature of the Church as a sign of God's kingdom and help the children turn to the Church for guidance in following Jesus.  In addition, children will have the opportunity to be a part of the Altar Servers Ministry Program for Parish Liturgies.  (Altar Servers Ministry is for Grades 3 and above)

GRADE 5:  (Program: Gospel Weeklies-Venture)

The Fifth Graders faith is enriched by a more in-depth look at the Sunday readings.  The Liturgical seasons form the foundation  of the sessions assisting the children understanding Catholic Christianity as a way of life.  The Sacraments, Scripture, and the lives of the saints highlight our heritage of belief.  Children explore and experience service opportunities. Activities, prayers, and practices help the children work for the kingdom of God.

GRADE 6:  (Program: Gospel Weeklies-Venture)

The Sixth Graders will begin a journey exploring and deepening their understanding of the Holy Bible through sessions based on the Sunday readings. The Holy Bible is the Book of the Church, our family story of faith. They will learn to understand the place of the Word of God in our lives.  Activities, prayers, and practices help the children to "hear the Word, and live it."

GRADE 7 and 8:  (Program: Gospel Weeklies-Vision)

The Seventh and Eighth Graders will review and re-commit to their journey toward God's Kingdom, in the context of their relationship with Jesus Christ by concentrating on the Sunday readings. They will discover more about Jesus, the Messiah through Scripture, the Church's teachings, and the witness of faithful disciples. Activities, prayers, and practices will help the children to apply the message of Jesus to their own lives, hopes, and struggles.  In addition, youth will have the opportunity to be a part of a Junior Liturgical Ministry Program as Jr. Hospitality Ministers (Greeters/Ushers) for weekend Liturgies. (The Junior Liturgical Ministry Program is for Grades 7 and above)
