The Crucifix
The Cruifix located behind the altar is a two-part effort. The cross itself was designed and made by Mr. Jerry Battle and Mr. Bob Sension. It is fashioned from an absolutely beautiful piece of African mahogany, "rescued" from a random pile of wood. Bob and Jerry spent many hours in the making of the cross; it was a labor of love during which they caressed the wood as they pieced it together and finished the surface. Even the more mundane mechanical tasks, such as its placement and mounting were accomplished reverently and prayerfully. It was a gift to see these two men create such a beautiful tribute to the instrument of our Redemption.
The corpus (Body of Christ) was made in Italy by the Demetz Art Studio. The company is located in Ortisei, a small village nestled in the Dolometies, a famous mountain range in the Northern part of Italy, at the heart of the Alps.
The selection of the corpus was made by consulting with the Parish Litrugy Committee, parish staff, and a number of other parishioners
Bishop Michael Burbidge wants the churches in the Diocese arranged according to the Church documents to which he too is subject. The governing documents are The General Instruction to the Roman Missal and Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture and Worship.
Both can be viewed at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
