The Stained Glass Windows

stained glass windowThe stained glass windows in out church came from the Holy Name Chapel at the Catholic Orphanage in Raleigh.  The orphanage was established by Father Thomas Fredrick Price in 1899.  The chapel was built in 1920.  There were at times 300 children at the orphanage -- most of whom were not orphans but chlldren of poor and needy families.   After World War II the number began to decrease.  In 1963 a new building (now used as The Catholic Center) was completed with a boys and girls wing.  The old buildings were closed.  By 1976 only 17 children were at the orphanage, non of whom were real orphans.  The residence of Bishop Waters was turned into a group home and the children moved there or were returned to their families.  All the old buildings were boarded up and began to deteriorate.  Their was so much vandalism that it was decided to tear down all the old buildings.  It was at this time that St. Egbert community was planning a new Church.   Our pastor at the time, Monsignor Morton, had been Chancellor of the Diocese and asked for the windows for our church.   Monsignor Gerald Lewis arranged with Bishop Gossman that the windows would be given to St. Egbert parish.  The windows were installed in 1980 by Robert Wysocki, Stained Glass Associated, Knightdale, NC>

Our largest window as destroyed by hurricane Ophelia in 2005.  Mike Marsh, who now owns and operated Stained Glass Associates and apprenticed under Mr. Wysocki, has restored and installed our new window.  Some of the original glass was used but much was beyond salvaging.
