After retiring from public school with thirty-four years experience, Mrs. Guthrie is in her eighth year at St. Egbert Catholic School. She moved to North Carolina and attended East Carolina University where she earned her B.S. in Early Childhood Education. She began teaching in Northampton County as a Title 1 Reading Specialist in a middle school. After falling in love with her students, she decided to go back to school to become certified in Middle Grades Language Arts. After moving to Carteret County she earned her National Board Certification and was a NC Teacher Academy Trainer for fourteen years. As a lay servant in her church, she has had many opportunities to share her love of God and family. She enjoys singing in the choir, sewing, and reading during her free time.
Why do you teach at Saint Egbert?
I have always heard that when God closes one door, He opens another. After retiring from public school I wanted to continue working with students and teachers. God led me to St. Egbert Catholic School where I started working with the after school program. Since then, I have moved from after care to working with the technology program and the school library. I feel so blessed to be able to work with children and staff members, and to be able to incorporate my love of reading into my work is an added bonus! God definitely knew the best place for me, and I feel truly blessed to be working with the wonderful staff, parents and students here at St. Egbert.
